Family Devo: UNDERSTANDING HOW TO WORSHIP LIKE GOD WANTS

Read the text and briefly discuss it together. Some discussion-starter questions are provided. Then read the closing text as a guide to your family prayer and finish by praying together and singing a hymn.

Today, we're going to talk about how we can learn to worship God the right way, just like He wants us to.

Imagine you're playing a game, and there's a rule book. You want to play the game right, so you read the rules carefully. That's kind of like what we do with the Bible. The Bible is like God's rule book for life and how we should worship Him.

The Bible tells us to do our best to understand what it says (2 Timothy 2:15). Think of it like trying to solve a puzzle. We want to put all the pieces in the right spots, not make up our own picture. The puzzle of Scripture has two sections, the Old and New Testaments, and three big steps God used to teach us His whole will for us to live by.

The First Step was when God was teaching the very first people on Earth about Him. He talked to people like Noah and Abraham. They didn't have a big rules book yet; they just trusted in God. We call this the Patriarchal Age when the ancient fathers ruled.

The Second Step was when God gave lots of rules through Moses. These rules showed people that everyone makes mistakes (sins) and needs help to be good. Jesus came to follow these rules perfectly, which led to the Law being finished and removed from being the rule system we live by today.

The Third Step is our time now, called the Church Age. Jesus taught us that it's not just about following rules but about loving God and trusting in Him through faith. That's why we read the New Testament, which talks about Jesus and His teachings. The New Testament teaches us how to worship God the way He wants us to, in spirit and truth.

Now, here's a cool part: God has already told us how He wants us to worship Him. It’s not right to just guess or make up our own way. We follow what Jesus and His apostles taught in the New Testament. It's simple, it works, and it's for everyone, no matter where you live!

Remember, just like playing by the rules in a game makes it fun and fair, following God's way of worship helps us connect with Him in the way that pleases Him!

Discuss:

Why is it important to understand the Bible, like putting together a puzzle and making sure each piece (or verse) fits where it's supposed to?

Which of the three steps do we live by now? Why?

How does knowing there's a “rule book” for worship make you feel about how we worship at church or home?

Why do you think God made His way of worship simple and the same for everyone, no matter where they are from?

This week, we learned more about how to worship God acceptably. Let’s say a special prayer and ask God to help us eagerly search the Scriptures all our lives so we can keep growing in our knowledge of His will and ability to please Him as He deserves.
